APE Policies and Procedures

Attendance and Participation

Students are expected to attend the classes on the days and times for which they enroll.  Progress and success in reaching goals cannot be obtained without active participation.  Excused absences must be health and/or disability related. Students with an extended absence may be dropped from the course.

All students need to be accounted for during a class. If you have to leave for some reason, notify the instructor or staff.  Students who have been away from class due to illness must check in with the instructor prior to resuming their exercise program. In some cases, a doctor's consent to return to exercise may be needed.

Important Information

Please check your course syllabus for the attendance policy that applies to the course.

Disruptive Behavior

A student who disrupts class may be asked to leave. De Anza College enforces all procedures set forth in the Student Code of Conduct.   For other policies regarding student rights and responsibilities, see the College policies.  Appropriate remedial and/or disciplinary steps will be taken when violations occur.

 Exercise Assistants

There are a limited number of trained student assistants working in the APE classroom. It is the instructor’s responsibility and decision to assign exercise assistants to work with enrolled students.Whenever possible assistants will be split between two or more students.  The instructor will determine how long an assistant will work with a student in an APE class.  Students enrolled in multiple classes will not receive assistance in each class. De Anza College will enforce all policies and procedures set forth in the Student Standards of Conduct (see catalog).  Any student disrupting a class may be asked to leave that class.  Administrative follow-up may result.

Important Information

Some students enrolled in the APE classes have environmental sensitivities and allergic reactions. We ask all students, faculty, and staff to please refrain from excessive use of perfumes, colognes, scented deodorants, etc.  Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Personal Attendant

Students in the APE program are responsible for their personal hygiene needs. De Anza College and the APE program does not provide students with a personal care attendant. Students must take responsibility for any necessary dressing and undressing, taking of medications, and getting to and using the bathroom. Such arrangements must be made by the student.

The APE Exercise Assistants' role is only to help APE students with their exercise programs in the classroom.

Students must not present a health hazard to themselves or others in the classroom. If this is or becomes an issue, the student must make arrangements for a personal attendant to accompany him or her.

The APE staff will provide minor assistance, on a case-by-case basis. For instance, students may be helped to put on or take off a robe, sweat clothes, or slippers down at the pool deck. However, no assistance can be provided in the locker room for dressing or showering.

In an emergency situation, a student may be assisted in getting to the bathroom, but will not be assisted in the restroom itself.  If this need becomes a regular occurrence, a personal attendant must be arranged in order for the student to continue APE enrollment.

 Exercise Clothing

Clothing
In class, wear loose comfortable clothing.  Exercise clothing is recommended if your exercise routine causes you to sweat.  If you sweat excessively you should have a small towel to wipe down exercise equipment after use.

Shoes
Closed toe shoes are required on all treadmills, Flexicisers, and walking activities. This is especially important for students with balance issues and/or diabetes. Sandals are not permitted.

Exercise Safety Tips

Heart Rate
In class, do not exceed your exercise target heart rate as determined by your instructor.  If you exercise at home use a lower target heart rate. Alcohol and exercise do not mix.  Do not drink alcohol within four hours of your exercise class.  Alcohol can increase your heart rate and cause irregularbeats. Caffeine and Tobacco both affect your heart rate. Do not consume either prior to your exercise class.

Prior to class
Do not eat a heavy meal before your exercise class.  A light snack an hour or so prior to the exercise class may help avoid hunger and give you an energy boost.  Foods that are easily digested are recommended (i.e. complex carbohydrates). Avoid simple carbohydrates and sugary snacks as they may have the opposite affect - they don't satisfy your hunger and can actually reduce your energy.  Be sure to take your daily medications as you normally would.  Any additions or changes to your medication routine should be reported to your instructor and recorded in your file.

Be on time to class and don't leave early. Don't cheat yourself on your exercise time.

During class
It is important to take time to warm up before getting into the heavier portion of your exercise routine. Make sure you are breathing properly on every exercise.  It is not ok to "hold your breath" or "bear down" when exercising.  Exhale on the most strenuous part of an exercise repetition.

Aerobic Exercise
With any aerobic exercise program, warm up is essential and the cool down should be gradual.  Allow time for your heart rate to come down after exercise before you begin stretching on the mats. Don't leave early until you have reached your cool down pulse rate.
