New Assessment Policy: Mathematics

Please note

  • To learn how you may be affected by the new assessment policies for English and English as a Second Language (ESL), please visit the Language Arts Assessment webpage.

De Anza College is now using multiple methods to assess students’ Math and English skills. Depending on your individual circumstances, you may no longer need to take placement tests. If you have not yet taken placement tests, please visit our main Assessment Center webpage to learn about the new assessment process.

  • If you have already taken placement tests for Math, you may now be eligible to enroll directly in certain transfer-level courses, regardless of where you had been placed. See the new rules below.
  • If you are currently enrolled in Basic Skills or developmental courses (MATH 210, MATH 212 or MATH 114), you may now be eligible to take certain transfer-level courses under the new policy. See the new rules below.

Here are the new rules.

Basic Skills and Developmental Courses Still Available

Pre-Calculus (MATH 41) *

Certain students are eligible to enroll directly into MATH 41 (Pre-Calculus I: Theory of Functions) based on their U.S. high school GPA and classes taken.

In order to qualify for MATH 41 on the basis of your GPA, you’ll need to make sure that De Anza has your U.S. high school transcript.

  • Check MyPortal to see if you’ve been given a Math placement: Log in to MyPortal and click on the Registration tab, then click on "See My Placement Test Results."
  • If you don't see a placement, you will need to submit your high school information by using the Student Assessment form.

In addition, students may qualify to enroll in MATH 41 by taking the Accuplacer College Level Test or by successfully completing MATH 114 (College Math Preparation Level 3: Intermediate Algebra).

*For students who would like a little more support: De Anza will offer a special section of MATH 41 in fall 2018 as part of the Math Performance Success (MPS) program.
